William Matheny w/ David Dondero, Dubb Nubb
If you werent listening to the lyrics of Mathenys songs, theyd be plenty appealing already: Jackson Browne pop hooks alternate with alt-country tunes that might call to mind Drive-By Truckers. At times, his delivery recalls a twangy Craig Finn. But then, if you werent listening to the lyrics, youd be doing it wrong.
Take, for example, Gods Left Hand, the albums second track. An upbeat country-rocker, it presents a series of vignettes that in a way illustrate the maxim about life happening while youre busy making other plans. But instead of missing the minutiae while thinking ahead to the next big thing, Mathenys character is taking in the little challenges of life while waiting on that lucky break--and thinking about what that lucky break may mean in the larger picture.
Its in the details where Matheny will make true believers. His songs are full of moments that match smart observation with wordplay thats impressive mostly in its effortlessness. Theres some laughing Katherine / down at the end of the bar / with some funny Daniel / down at the end of her arm, he sings in Blood Moon Singer. Its a scene that could take place anywhere, and does, which is Mathenys point, as he illustrates the blur of touring life. But no one put it quite that way until William Matheny came along.
Storyteller, songwriter--William Matheny is the kind of artist who garners instant respect from other artists, even as he makes songs so effortlessly catchy. We could resent that he didnt arrive with this collection sooner, but lets instead celebrate that hes here with it now.
David Dondero has done all kinds of work in his life. He's been a carpenter, a cook, a trucker, a bartender in Alaska, a drummer in This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, a solar panel installer, a day laborer, a record store clerk, and a gas pumping attendant in New Jersey, but at the end of the day he's a songwriter.
He released his ninth studio album called Inside the Cat's Eye on January 23 via Koschke Records. You can listen to it here:
In 2006, NPR's "All Songs Considered" named him one of the "10 Best Living Songwriters."
In October Keeled Scales will release his second album, Spider West Myhskin and a City Bus, (recorded in 1999), on vinyl for the first time ever.
Dubb Nubb (St. Louis)
"Since high school, twin sisters Delia and Hannah Rainey have been playing their exuberant brand of folk/country/indie as Dubb Nubb. Once again St. Louis-based after a spell at Mizzou, they continue to play the citys clubs, basements and backyards with abandon. Theyve also branched out a bit over the past year: Hannah leads Shady Bug, who specialize in loud-soft melodic crunch and bittersweet lyrics, while Delia is one-quarter of all girl climactic pop rock act Berry Barbie. Thankfully, however, they havent neglected Dubb Nubb, whose intimate, friendly live shows are as St. Louis as a backyard game of washers and a few cans of Stag on a hazy midsummer evening."
