The Missing Piece: The Truth About the Man Who Stole the Mona Lisa

California Central Valley Premiere

Directed by Joe Medeiros:

Many truths about the world's most celebrated painting are uncovered through an ordinary man's journey to attain answers about an extraordinary heist in this entertaining documentary. Documenting the mysterious theft of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa from the Lourve in 1911, this often humorous and thoroughly informative documentary sheds light on one of history's most infamous art crimes. The film follows documentarian Joe Medeiros, a veteran television writer from Philadelphia who has obsessed over Mona Lisa's theft for many years. Medeiros' has made it his mission to discover how and why a seemingly ordinary Italian man, Vincenzo Peruggia, managed to execute such an ambitious heist. Though many scholars have researched this case in the past, until now their explanations have been too vague and inconsistent. In his travels to Italy, Medeiros decides to interview Peruggia's 84 year-old daughter, to whom he promises answers about her father's crime, which proves to be easier said than done. Despite his self-imposed challenge, Medeiros manages to unearth clues, (including everything from mysterious newspaper clippings to Peruggia's psychiatric evaluation) that are as groundbreaking as the crime they inform. The shocking truth reveals that not only was Peruggia a master thief, but he is also largely responsible for Mona Lisa's internationally iconic status. For art-lovers and historians alike, this documentary is not to be missed. (Philadelphia Film Festival)
