ART MEETS JAZZ/TRIBUTE TO LEE MORGAN || Today is THE DAY and these are the cats who will be blowing your mind at Bread & Salt, a cool/edgy old Wonder Bread Bakery, in Barrio Logan: Gilbert C Castellanos (trumpet), Ryan Shaw (drums), Dean Hulett (bass), Joshua White (piano) and special guest Graham Dechter (guitar). At 7PM, doors open so come and check out the cool artwork by Southern California artists - Lea Liba Janson, Lev Tsimring, Khalid Alkaaby, Delmar Antonio, Brian Meyer, Un Seung, Jonathan Dennis Williams, Brent Trembath, Maria Elena Cruz - who are in the mix capturing the heartbeat of the #SanDiegoJazzScene! 7PM Doors Open (check out the art, have a glass of vino or beer with friends, enjoy treats from Kellies Desserts) 8PM Downbeat!!! Gilbert Castellanos & Arlene Damasco Present ART MEETS JAZZ, a new series featuring unique salutes to the greatest legends of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, and on July 1, Lee Morgan! Southern California artists who support and capture the vibrant San Diego jazz scene utilizing various mediums - photography, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, sketch, etc. - will showcase their original work each night. This series merges music and art to highlight multiple-perspectives, and the talented musicians, that create the heartbeat of jazz in Americas Finest City.

THE BAND:

GILBERT CASTELLANOS (Band Leader/Trumpet)
Leading the band is none other than virtuoso trumpeter and Downbeat Magazine American Master Gilbert Castellanos. Artistic Director of the San Diego Symphony's "Jazz at The Jacobs," and Director of the major art institution's inaugural big band, the Jazz @ The Jacobs Orchestra, Castellanos knows what it takes to make a jazz series a success. He has been a driving force in the San Diego jazz scene for two decades, having been awarded Best Jazz Artist six times by the San Diego Music Awards, as well as Artist of the year in 2013. He was recently recognized as a 2017 Jazz Hero by the national Jazz Journalists Association. Castellanos is host to the city's longest running weekly jazz jam at Panama 66 at the San Diego Museum of Art, and is a renowned music educator and champion of the next generation of jazz, curating a weekly Young Lions Series at Panama 66/San Diego Museum of Art. He served as Artistic Director for the International Academy of Jazz, and is launching a new jazz venture, fulfilling a longtime dream - The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory. Castellanos continues to find new avenues to keep jazz alive and well!

GRAHAM DECHTER (Guitar)
An accomplished guitarist, composer and arranger, Los Angeles native Graham Dechter plays with swinging authority and has toured worldwide with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra for over a decade. A formidable soloist and consummate accompanist, Dechter plays with a deep reverence for the jazz guitar tradition apparent whether ballad, bossa, bebop or blues. A partial list of his credits include: the La La Land movie soundtrack, Michael Bublés best-selling Christmas album, guitarist for Brazilian jazz pianist and vocal sensation, Eliane Elias, and regular performances with drummer Jeff Hamilton and Hammond B-3 organist Akiko Tsuruga. He has also worked with saxophonists Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath,Frank Wess, Charles McPherson and James Moody; guitarists John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Mundell Lowe and Russell Malone; organists Larry Goldings and Atsuko Hashimoto; singers Jon Hendricks, Nancy Wilson and Kurt Elling; violinist Regina Carter; pianists Billy Taylor, Freddie Cole, Benny Green and Bill Charlap; clarinetist Paquito D Rivera; trombonists Curtis Fuller and Wycliffe Gordon; and trumpeters Terell Stafford, Clark Terry, Snooky Young and Wynton Marsalis.

JOSHUA WHITE (Piano)
Jazz pianist and composer Joshua White, trained in both classical and gospel music traditions, encountered jazz music at UCSD Summer Camp in 2003. He dove into the music with the help of musicians including composer Anthony Davis, saxophonist David Borgo, flutist Holly Hofmann, and pianist Mike Wofford. In September 2011, he earned second place in the International Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. White is a master at listening and responding in the moment and is more about engaging in a musical conversation that responds to the individuals at hand, both on the bandstand, and in the audience. Anyone who has caught White can testify to his astonishing facility and ability to blend his talents with whomever hes playing. He sounds comfortable and authentic, whether its in a be-bop or Latin setting with trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, on a recording session supporting vocalist Sharon DuBois, or in duet with contrabass giant Marshall Hawkins.In May 2012, he formed the Joshua White Quintet focusing on interpreting original compositions, as well as exploring the boundaries of collective improvisation. He has built an impactful presence in the San Diego jazz scene hosting his own well-attended shows. In late 2015, he performed concerts in Beijing with leading New York saxophonist David Binneys band, followed by a tour of seven European countries with New York saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthanppa. He performed with acclaimed pianists Eric Reed and Helen Sung in the Jazz @ The Jacobs Jazz Piano Masters: A Tribute to Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum and Bud Powell, and is a member of the inaugural San Diego Symphony Jazz @ The Jacobs Orchestra directed by Gilbert Castellanos.

RYAN SHAW (Drums)
Ryan Shaw began his musical pursuits at the age of five on piano. By age 8, he began studying with Steve Noyd on percussion. After getting his first drum set at the age of 10, he began playing at his church regularly while participating in his school's Band and Jazz Band. Ryan then moved with his family to San Diego, California where he began attending Poway High School and participating in their Marching and Jazz Bands. He was also selected as the drummer for the SCSBOA Honor Jazz Band in 2013. Ryan is now pursuing his Jazz Studies degree at the University of Southern California, studying under Peter Erskine. Outside of school, Ryan performs regularly with Gilbert Castellanos and Joshua White, and has had the opportunity to perform with Bob Sheppard, Bob McChesney, Graham Dechter, Rob Lockhart, Joshua White, Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford and more. Ryan has also had the opportunity to study with Jeff Hamilton, Peter Erskine, Roy McCurdy, Kevin Kanner, Dan Schnelle, Duncan Moore, Mike Holguin, Bryan Taylor, Lance Beckford, Paul Casey, and Steve Noyd. He is a member of the inaugural San Diego Symphony Jazz @ The Jacobs Orchestra directed by Gilbert Castellanos, and has performed at many of the hottest Southern California Jazz clubs including the Blue Whale, Catalina, Vitellos, Vibrato, and Spaghettini.

DEAN HULETT (Upright Bass)
Dean Pop Pop Hulett, the line-up's upright bass player, started playing the double bass at the age of eight. In 2001, he had the pleasure of playing with such musicians as Mark Lomax, James Gaiters, Bobby Floyd, Edwin Bayard, Hamilton Hardin, Jerome Jennings and many others. Dean has also shared the stage with well-known musicians such as members of the Marsalis family, toured with Delfeayo Marsalis, Derek Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, and can be found on recordings with Azar Lawrence and others. Locally you can catch him jamming with Gilbert Castellanos, Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, Joshua White and more!
