Tongue Play at the Parodos Festival
A workshop of the new musical Tongue Play by Lola Xenos will connect theatre practice and immigrant communities to examine and represent the growing population of audible minority Canadians, a group of people that speak English with a noticeable foreign or "non-Standard Canadian" accent and currently represent one fifth of the Canadian population.
Every year approximately 200,000 people immigrate to Canada. The vast majority of them are easily identifiable as immigrants due to their accents, whose pronunciation differ from those of "Standard Canadian English." This can influence their life trajectories and limit their professional and social opportunities.
Theatre is a vital piece of a society's ability to define itself, and, as such, it is crucial to fairly represent audible minority voices in Canada. This new musical presents a narrative of immigrants many roles in shaping the Canadian English language, cultural identity, and social milieu, in a comedic, light-hearted style.
