The Salish Sea Refugee Sponsorship Group (SSRSG) is a group of friends and neighbours, motivated by compassion and a sense of justice who have decided to sponsor two young Syrian men. We are working in partnership with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria under Canada's Private Refugee Sponsorship Program to bring these brothers to Victoria and reunite them previously immigrated family members.
Due to conflict in Syria they have had to relocate several times within Syria and when the risks increased for them, they fled to Lebanon where they have been in a refugee camp for the past three years. They have suffered the death of family members and separation from others, disruption of education, uncertainty, and trauma.
We are raising funds for the sponsorship year and while they await the completion of the application process, we are providing English lessons and the use of online language programs, and addressing their dental needs. We can continue to prepare them for life in Canada with work related training to make their transition to Canadian life as successful as possible.
We invite you to an evening of fun to celebrate the hopefulness that comes from helping others land on their feet and begin a new chapter in their lives. We may not solve the world's problems, but we can give two young people a chance.
