Join Mills College's Black Student's Collective & BHM 365 for an evening of theater with Oakland's oldest Black Theater Company, The Lower Bottom Playaz.
On March 24, 2017, in Lisser Hall, Ayodele Nzinga and Kharyshi Washington will perform their one-woman shows and discuss the creative process with the audience. These stellar shows will dig deep into the realities of black women, their communities, their families, their struggles, and their triumphs.
Ayodele Nzinga is a creative force who has been a leading figure in the East Bay theater community for more than four decades. She has led several groundbreaking productions of African American theater classics and continues to give voice to underserved communities through her art. She is truly a renaissance woman an actor, director, poet/lyricist, producer, dramaturge, author, and playwright. As the founding director of The Lower Bottom Playaz, Oakland's oldest North American African Theater Company, she helped make history when the troupe was the first ever to stage August Wilson's entire American Century Cycle in chronological order. Recently, Ayodele produced Collective Acts, Oakland's first Black Arts Movement Theater Festival, while also appearing in a one-woman performance of Opal Palmer Adisa's Bathroom Graffiti Queen and directing a new production of her own original work, Mama at Twilight: Death by Love. Nzinga has been recognized by Theater Bay Area as one of the 40 faces that changed the face of theater in the Bay Area over the last 40 years, by the Alameda County Arts Commission for Excellence in Arts Leadership, and is being inducted into the Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame in 2017 for her contributions to Arts and Culture.
Kharyshi Wiginton a multi-dimensional artist. Shes a graduate of Cal State San Bernardino with a degree in theatre arts and dance. Kharyshis contributed her talents to productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, For Colored Girls, Pippin and Godspell. She was Artistic Director for Equal Opportunity Productions, and in 2003 she accompanied 12 youth and 7 mentors to South Africa for an international cultural exchange project. Artistic Director for Soze II. In 2005, she went back to South Africa as a member of the group Colors of the Diaspora where she participated in an international cultural exchange project for adults, and presented a show in the 2005 National Arts Festival in South Africa. Kharyshis a fierce dancer, writer, spoken word artist.
