The Clearing
The Clearing is a powerful drama of passion and treachery. Madeleine and Robert Preston are proud new parents in Ireland. But it is a time of religious and political turmoil as there is a new policy of ethnic cleansing. While Robert is a proud English landowner, Madeleine's Irish roots go deep. Unpredictable and suspenseful, the play shows the effects of a country that is ripped at the seams.
Helen Edmundson said of her play, "I wrote the play in 1993, at the time of the civil war in former Yugoslavia amidst the expressions of horror and disbelief at fellow Europeans displaying such barbarism. Which one of us can be absolutely certain that, under similar circumstances, we would not be susceptible to propaganda? But perhaps there is hope. Perhaps the numbers marching in recent peace rallies show that more and more people are able to see the big picture. Perhaps, when it comes to loving beyond what we know, it is just early days and by the end of the century, we will all be confident enough to consider ourselves citizens of the world."
