VOYAGE: The Slave Journey
In February of 2017, SACRA/PROFANA will present a meaningful concert in honor of Black History Month- Voyage: The Slave Journey with performances at The Maritime Museum of San Diego and All Souls Episcopal Church in Point Loma. Anchored by the San Diego Premiere of Anthony Davis momentous a cappella work Voyage Through Death to Life Upon These Shores, this program will touch on the legacy of slavery. This moving event will also feature The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir San Diego.
The first half of the concert will include Anthony Davis virtuosic multi-movement choral work, which explores the slave narratives that helped shape this countrys diverse voices with text based on the poem "Middle Passage" by Robert Hayden. This work has only had five performances putting SACRA/PROFANA in the elite company of some of the top choral ensembles in the country including Chanticleer, The Dale Warland Singers, and Musica Sacra. Under the direction of Associate Artistic Director Juan Carlos Acosta, Voyage: The Slave Journey will truly demonstrate how this innovative ensemble continues to redefine the choir. Anthony Davis will be present at all performances.
For the second half of the program, the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir (under the direction of Ken Anderson) will brilliantly tell the rest of the story from the slave trade up-to the modern era, including chances to join in the singing. Each performance will be followed by an open discussion with the artists.
SACRA/PROFANA continues to celebrate diversity and the collaborative spirit and engage all generations during its 8th Season.
