The Impact of Skin-to-Skin Contact on Infant Brain Development- Dr. Nils Bergman
Immediate skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn supports critical development of the intricate sensors of the newborn brain according to research by Nils Bergman, MD, MPH, PhD.  Dr. Bergman says The first hours after birth are a critical period. Early experiences define the brain's configuration, sculpting it for a lifetime and these experiences are embedded in the attachment relationship between the mother and baby.  In his research he reports Maternal dependence is the critical factor that ensures healthy brain development.  At birth, a baby is 100% dependent on its mother.  It is vital that care providers and parents together implement skin-to-skin care for all newborns.
