In 1997, the discovery of Egon Schiele's 'Portrait of Wally,' on the walls of the Museum of Modern Art, triggered a historic court case. In 1939, Nazis seized the beloved Shiele painting of Austrian art collector Lea Bondi. This fascinating and intricate story tells about the intolerance, disrespect and lack of cooperation that impounded the Schiele painting until 2010 , 71 years after its theft, and brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to search their own collections for suspect objects. The 13-year war over "Wally" was more than a dispute over property stolen from Jews during the Holocaust. It was a battle over history and memory.
