Dancing Feet 2017 - A Multi-Ethnic Dance Extravaganza at the Louis B. Mayer Theatre, Santa Clara University,  presented by The Red Thistle Dancers

The Red Thistle Dancers of Palo Alto, California proudly present Dancing Feet 2017, a weekend of multi-ethnic dance performance, bringing together a diverse program of talented artists and performing groups representing the multi-cultural and historical traditions within the greater San Francisco Bay Area.   Each performance will have a different variety of performers.

This family-friendly concert of international dance and live music features solo and group dancing from the various regions of  Scotland, Spain, Mexico, Bulgaria, United States, and the Middle East.

Dancing Feet 2017  features the talents of The Red Thistle Dancers, The San Francisco Flamenco Company, Los Lupeños de San José, Antika Bulgaria,  The House of Inanna, and The San Jose School of Highland Dance.

The Red Thistle Dancers are a Scottish Country and Highland Dance performance group based in the Palo Alto.  Accompanied by the Red Thistle Musicians and Great Highland bagpipes, they perform the elegant strathspeys and energetic reels and jigs of the traditional ballroom dance form of Scotland.  Founded in 1973 under Artistic Director, Jennifer Kelly, The Red Thistle Dancers are dedicated to promoting Scottish culture through music and dance in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond and perform at outdoor events and fairs, schools, private parties, fundraising events, weddings and conventions, and have toured internationally in both Norway and the Czech Republic.

Los Lupeños de San José is one of the oldest Mexican folk dance companies in the United States, founded in 1969, providing traditional regional folk dances.  Under the artistic direction of choreographer Samuel Cortez, Los Lupeños strengthens its artistry, history, traditions, innovation, and endurance. As part of the Cashion Cultural Legacy program, Los Lupeños is proud to participate in the preservation, presentation, and education of Mexican folk culture through dance.

Founded by Tanya Kostova (Artistic director and choreographer) Antika Bulgaria is part of the larger Antika Bulgarian Ensemble and Cultural Club which promotes the culture of Bulgarian traditions, folklore dances and music in the Bay Area. Musical Director and musician Rumen Shopov, a member of the Roma people has performed all over the world, championing the music of Bulgarian, Macedonian, Turkish, and especially the Roma (gypsy) people. Traditional Bulgarian musical instruments, include the gajde, a type of traditional Bulgarian bagpipe and the tupan, a double-headed drum played with sticks.  The dancers of Antika Bulgaria always delight with their distinctive rhythmic steps and brightly colored costumes representing the different folkloric regions of the dances.

The San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company, now in its thirteenth year and led by artistic director Kerensa DeMars, presents performances in the San Francisco Bay Area, hosts visiting artists from Spain, and supports the development of local Flamenco artists through workshops and performance opportunities.   This stirring and exciting Spanish art form combines guitar playing "guitarra", song "cante" and dancing "baile", and originated in the southern regions of Spain with influences from neighboring traditions.

San Jose-based House of Inanna evokes the magic of feminine grace and power through dance movements inspired by the length of the historical Silk Road, from Rajasthan through Turkey and Egypt, to Morocco and Spain, further manifested in their elaborate and exotic attire.  Founded in 2003, House of Inanna performs a spirited, engaged format of dance called American Tribal Style Belly Dance, which coalesced from the dance experience of San Franciscos own Carolena Nericcio in the late 1980s.

The San Jose School of Highland Dancing, located in Campbell, was founded in the 1960's and continues to promote the Scottish Highland Dance Tradition in the San Francisco Bay Area.  From its origins in the highlands of Scotland as a ritual dance form performed to ensure victory in battle (and once performed only by men), Highland Dancing has evolved into a competitive and technical dance form requiring technique, stamina, and strength, and is recognized as a sport by the Sport Council of Scotland.  The school's dancers of all ages compete at Scottish Highland Games at the local, regional and national levels and also enjoy performing at festivals, parties, parades and demonstrations.
