19th Annual Gospel Concert Symphonic Praise!
The Symphonic Praise Choir again joins the Philharmonic Orchestra to blend the tradition of gospel and praise vocal music with the instruments of a full symphonic orchestra. The result is a concert of exceptional beauty and excitement.
Reginald Walters, executive producer Para Lee Gale, Geoffrey Kelsaw, Robert Townsend, leadership team
Year after year, one of the most amazing collaborations undertaken by the Philharmonic, is this concert where the Phil resonates with the work of our Symphonic Praise Choir, its personal power and praise raising the roof of Pike! With the guidance of extraordinarily talented leadership, this concert is a progression of respect, wisdom, and strength as witnessed by our musicians and the Phil's all-volunteer Symphonic Praise Choir! This year's concert reflections are some of the most powerful yet in this progression of concerts through the years.
In 1998, Jackson Wiley, who was then the conductor and artistic director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis created a concert to celebrate Black History Month. He asked his colleagues Reginald Walters and Para Lee Gale to help him recruit a volunteer choir to accompany the Phil on the vocal selections of the concert.
The audience, the singers, the orchestra, and the leadership enjoyed the production so much that the Gospel Concert has become an annual production of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis. The program has grown to showcase and celebrate black musicians contributions to the symphonic music corpus as well as to gospel and praise traditions.
Many members of the Symphonic Praise Choir are among the original members from the 1998 performance. When not performing with the Phil, many of our volunteer musicians are leaders in their church choirs.
