In conjunction with Slovensko Mladinsko Theatre of Llublyana, Slovenia, Chronos has commissioned an English translation of this play, written in 1808 by written in 1908 by the man known as the "Shakespeare of Slovenia". The English version is by Rawley Grau, an American expert in Slavic literature who has translated several works by Cankar. Our production of this new translation has been endorsed by the Slovenian Minister of Culture.
"Scandal" is one of Slovenia's most popular plays, but it has never received a professional translation or production in the U.S. The plot concerns a small town with a hidden secret: 25 years ago an illegitimate child was born -- and, like Moses, sent down the river by the scandalized townspeople. Suddenly, a young "artist" arrives on the outskirts of town who claims to be the long-lost foundling. He is accompanied by a beautiful girl and a strangely likable but rather ineffectual man from France...who is actually the Devil. The play examines corruption, money, sex -- and also the nature of art and love.
The director, Ivan Rupnik, wants to discover the similarities between people in Slovenia over a hundred years ago and small-town America today. He brings a modern European approach to this classic play, and in fact has played the Devil himself in other productions of this play. Ivan is a well-known actor in Slovenia who has been a member of Mladinsko for almost 30 years. As an Artistic Associate with Chronos Theatre, he has consulted and trained our ensemble in commedia dell'arte for "The Coffee Shop" and our educational outreach. He also directed last year's artistic success, "Yelizaveta Bam" by Daniil Kharms, a Russian Absurdist play which Rupnik enhanced with selected short stories by the author and personal memories of life in a communist country in the 1960s.
