The Gin Game
THE GIN GAME, Donald L. Coburns first play, won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It opened on Broadway, October 6, 1977, directed by Mike Nichols, and starring legendary husband and wife Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy. Tandy won the Best Actress Tony that year.
THE GIN GAME is a fundraiser benefitting the Fresno Art Museum, directed and underwritten by Jerry Palladino, Founder and Artistic Director of CURTAIN 5 TheatreGROUP, and Raoul Scott, owner of Fresno Soap Co. Stage, Gallery & Studio. Mr. Palladino is also a member of the Fresno Art Museum Board of Trustees.
Plot Synopsis for THE GIN GAME:
Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, two lonely residents of a nursing home for senior citizens, meet and strike up an acquaintance. Weller offers to teach Fonsia how to play gin rummy. In the series of games that follow, Fonsia always wins. As Wellers frustration rises, so does Fonsias confidence. In playing gin, they talk extensively about their families and lives in the outside world. The conversations turn to battles, and like their gin games, the players do their best to expose the others weaknesses, as well as thoroughly belittle and humiliate one other. The play becomes a eulogy of two elderly people; both painfully alone, whose verbal warfare eventually destroys the last chance they may have for any lasting human contact.
The drama features local husband and wife, Art and Charlene Cano. Art authored his first original drama, JAZZ MAN, and also played a lead role in local writer, D. W. Catos drama, US & THEM, both for Fresno Soap Co. in 2015. Art was also seen in the California Public Theater production of THE GREAT GATSBY. Charlene has graced the stage in Good Company Players productions of HAIRSPRAY, THE PRODUCERS, SPAMALOT, SWEET CHARITY, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, and THE CRUCIBLE. Her other roles include the lead role of Rebecca Singleton in JAZZ MAN for Fresno Soap Co., NECROMANCIN AROUND in 2016 for CURTAIN 5 TheatreGROUP, DINNER WITH DAN for the San Francisco Fringe Festival, and THE GREAT GATSBY for CPT. She has also been seen in television guest spots on Fernwood Tonight and Mario The Magician, and earlier this year made her Fresno Soap Co. Stage debut as the director of TAPE by Stephen Belber.
