Rachmaninov VESPERS
"Orthodoxy is first of all the the love of beauty. Our entire life must be inspired by the vision of heavenly glory, and this contemplation is the essence of Orthodoxy . . . Russian asceticism aims at manifesting God's Kingdom on earth. It does not deny this world, but emphasizes it." -- S. N Bulgakov The Vespers, or All-Night Vigil (although the performance does not last all night!) is one of Rachmaninov's most personal compositions since it is so closely linked to the traditional chants of the Orthodox liturgy. It is as though he is speaking, most profoundly, on behalf of fellow Russians throughout the ages. Join Choral Arts Philadelphia for our opening program in the magnificent acoustics and grand architecture of the "Cathedral on the Parkway" for this incredible choral tour de force.
