"Regenerate Detroit" Benefit Dinner
Tickets are now available for the second Regenerate Detroit dinner benefiting Detroit Food Academy. The dinner series, started by Detroit Lions DeAndre Levy with chef James Rigato, held its first dinner in July raising more than $16,000. Levy aims to provide resources and guidance for Detroit youth interested in revitalizing Detroit and its culinary scene. Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails, 15 E Kirby St, Monday, will host the next event Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. It will feature an 8-course menu created by Rigato, of Mabel Gray, and Chartreuse executive chef Doug Hewitt. Cost is $200 per person which includes tax, gratuity and wine pairings. All money raised will go toward funding a scholarship for a student from Detroit Food Academy to attend culinary school.

The previous Regenerate Detroit dinner held at Mabel Gray funded a full scholarship for Detroit Food Academys Brandon Johnson, 19, of Detroit to attend Schoolcraft College. During this dinner, Levy and Rigato aim to raise enough money to offer a full scholarship to a Detroit Food Academy student entering culinary school in 2017.

Founded in 2011, Detroit Food Academy is a year-round, youth leadership program supporting students from Detroit high schools developing culinary skills and translating those skills into their own good food business, selling the food products they create. Many students have a desire to continue what they learn in higher education, yet do not have the means to pursue their education. Funds from Regenerate Detroit will support these young Detroiters in reaching their educational and professional goals.

About Detroit Food Academy:

Detroit Food Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works with local educators, chefs, and business owners to inspire young Detroiters (ages 13-24) through self-directed entrepreneurial experiences rooted in food -- experiences which open doors, create connections, and spark confidence. From cooking delicious healthy meals for friends and family to facilitating complex conversations with community to develop artisan food projects from scratch to market, students learn by transforming their ideas into reality. Through this process, they grow as holistic leaders who are healthy, connected, and powerful to affect change within and beyond the local food system.
