MILHAUD La création du monde MOIDEL Love Sonnets HINDEMITH Mathis der Maler
Based on African folk mythology, Darius Milhauds 1923 composition The Creation of the World is his most famous work and has enjoyed sustained admiration in both its ballet and orchestral incarnations. It was a 1922 trip to the US that inspired Milhaud to introduce jazz elements in his music, including bluesy harmonies and swinging rhythms.
Paul Hindemith conceived the opera Mathis der Maler based on painter Matthias Grünewalds altarpiece depicting six scenes, from which grew these orchestral interludes presented here in the symphonic version. Composed in 1934 for a tour of the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, Symphony: Mathis der Maler became Hindemiths most famous work.
Seattle resident composer and pianist Jeffrey Moidel chose the poetry of Pablo Neruda as the basis of his Love Sonnets which will be sung by baritone Charles Robert Stephens.
