Requiem (Ashkava)
"Requiem" was written by the playwright Hanoch Levin on his deathbed in 1998 when it was clear to him that death was imminent. First staged in Israel in 1999 by the Cameri Theatre under his direction, it is the last play he directed. This award-winning play won the Israeli theater awards for play of the year, playwright of the year, director of the year, as well as awards for costume and lighting design, among others. It has represented Israel abroad more than any other play.
Based on three short stories by Anton Chekhov it was woven by Levin into one story that concentrates on life and the meaning of life. Requiem is a stirring, exciting and thought-provoking masterpiece. Directed by Ofra Daniel, "Requiem" will make its U.S. debut in the Silicon Valley and will be performed by Ensemble Bama Ivrit. Not to be missed.
