SPEAKER BIOS
Laura van Dernoot Lipsky, www.traumastewardship.com Laura is the founder and director of The Trauma Stewardship Institute and author of Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others. Widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of trauma exposure, she has worked locally, nationally, and internationally for more than three decades.
A decade into her career, Laura experienced what can best be described as a near-psychotic breakwhich, she came to realize, was the result of years of witnessing and being intimately involved in trauma while lacking insight into how to sustain herself amidst such conditions. As a part of her attempt to come back from the brink, she began a journey of inquiry into the lasting effects on both individuals and communities of exposure to the suffering, hardship, crisis, or trauma endured by humans, other living beings, or the planet itself.
Dr. Jana Pressley, www.traumacenter.org Massachusetts, USA Dr. Pressley's research interests are focused on the experience of court-involved young adults who have suffered relational trauma in the midst of chronic poverty and community violence, and the impact of complex trauma history on adult spirituality and meaning-making. She is a teacher, researcher, therapist and supervisor who specializes in the treatment of individuals and families impacted by complex trauma.
Jana is trained in EMDR, DBT, TF-CBT, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT-A), and Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Therapy (SMART). Dr. Pressley is a trainer and consultant for the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) program for the Trauma Center in Brooklline, MA, USA, and also provides training related to the impact of trauma on adult spirituality.
Jane Clapp www.janeclapp.com Jane is a master of mind, body and soul. While it is widely accepted that mindfulness is necessary to shape the body, Jane asserts that the body is one of the most powerful alchemic tools for shaping the mind. She is a practitioner in the holistic health and combines personal training with tension and trauma healing to help clients gain strength, mobility and energy. As the founder of Urbanfitt in Toronto, Jane has helped more than 1000 clients improve emotional and nervous system regulation, positively shift neuroplasticity and release somatized stress and trauma.
Dr. Jody Carrington www.drjodycarrington.com Dr. Jody Carrington is a private practice Clinical Psychologist who has spent most of her career working with children and families who have experienced trauma. She has developed an expertise, and passion for understanding the power in attachments to those who mean the most to you, particularly for those who are working through and living with trauma. She has worked with police officers and other emergency services personnel and their families, and spent 10 years working the Mental Health Inpatient Units of the Alberta Childrens Hospital, where she witnessed the power of the relationship in assisting children and their families who are struggling with emotional dysregulation and trauma histories.
Beverly Keeshig-Soonias is a registered psychologist, aboriginal woman and a member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation. In this learning session, she provides participants new to aboriginal cultures with a warm, safe, fun, story-telling, open dialogue learning environment. She introduces key traditions and describes cultural compass points and protocols that enable learners to build better relationships and provide culturally appropriate care for aboriginal children.
Beverly is married to Rod Soonias, L.L.B., a member of the Red Pheasant First Nation. Her parents and family members are survivors of Indian residential schools. She has extensive knowledge about wahkotowin (the business of being attached), the inter-generational and systemic effects of the Residential School Experience (intergenerational trauma), family systems, adolescents, addictions, and the power of healing. She has worked with adolescents and families since 1995 at Oskayak Treatment Centre and for community agencies.
Beverly works with youth and families regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, special need or disability. In June 2016, Beverly was presented with a "Women of Excellence" Award for her work in Human Services.
