Artemis Singers Presents: VOICES OF JOYFUL REBELLION
Join us to share the Pride and celebrate with a community dance! DJ Sheron will be spinning for this Hyde Park event on June 18, cohosted by Affinity Community Services.

In this VOICES of JOYFUL REBELLION concert, we present songs of rebellion, including "Goddesses' Rage" by Chicago composer Paula Walowitz, the source of our concert title: "This violation of all that is holy must stop. It's gone on too long. Voices of joyful rebellion are swelling. The power of life is again growing strong."

In the proud tradition of Artemis Singers, we will be performing woman-affirming choral music written or arranged by women, providing opportunities for lesbians to be visible, expressing sometimes-radical political perspectives, and being an integral part of the Chicago feminist women's community.

Songs in this year's Pride Concert evoke elements of the fever for social justice the feminist community:

* "Arise," from Mothers' Day 1870, words by Julia Ward Howe and music by The Righteous Mothers. A feminist song for peace.
* "Asikatali," traditional South African freedom song.
* "Compost," lively tango about giving the earth "a little break."
* Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid," giving voice to what many are really afraid of . . . "what you do in the name of your god."
Bernice Johnson Reagon's "I'm Gon' Stand," decrying racism, injustice, and exploitation.
* Haunting melody and theme of Joan Szymko's "Malala"
* "Who Stands for Life?" by Karen Escovitz, asks an aching question.
* Chicago composer Karen Mooney's "Listen" beckons us.
* And more! You'll have to come listen for yourself!!

About Artemis Singers
Still going strong after 35 years, Artemis Singers: Chicago's Lesbian Feminist Chorus is comprised of women with diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to performing music written or arranged by women. The chorus works to effect positive change in cultural attitudes toward women and women artists, as well as to increase the visibility of lesbian feminists.

Our goal in selecting and performing music is to provide an emotionally moving, spiritually and aesthetically uplifting, and politically motivating experience to our audience. We want to entertain, amuse, and educate; to highlight historical, political, and personal events and experiences common to women; and most of all, to share a sense of community with our audience. We put on public concerts once or twice a year, as well as performing at private functions and fundraisers by invitation.

Membership is open to all women singers, regardless of musical background. No audition is required.

We are a self-directed chorus; we have no paid director. Women who choose to direct Artemis Singers may direct one or many songs, and we may have six or more different directors during the course of any single performance. Our music is selected at meetings open to any member who chooses to participate.
