Ramesh Meyyappan VISUAL LANGUAGE
IN RESIDENCE: May 9 2016

PLEASE DONATE TO IRT THEATER

Visual Language workshop is an introduction to and brief exploration of how a visual theatrical language can work.   Using traditional play texts as a basis for exploration, participants will have an opportunity to play with visual ideas and consider a myriad of visual possibilities within storytelling to create a short visual narrative.

This will involve a process of deconstruction taking the text back to its bare bones, considering the basic themes, characterizations and narrative structures. This done the participants can begin to consider re-telling the narrative making use of a wide range of visual and physical styles from the abstract to the very literal.

IRT Theater is a grassroots laboratory for independent theater and performance in New York City, providing space and support to a new generation of artists. Tucked away in the old Archive Building in Greenwich Village, IRTs mission is to build a community of emerging and established artists by creating a home for the development and presentation of new work. Some of the artists we have supported include Young Jean Lee, Reggie Watts and Mike Daisey.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Office of Council Member Corey Johnson and The Nancy Quinn Fund, a project of ART-NY.
