"The Memory Closet" by Quicksilver Dance
Quicksilver Dance, recently relocated from Boston, MA, presents its sixth overall season, and first in the Bay Area, with a striking new show: The Memory Closet. Featuring five dances and one interactive installation, The Memory Closet digs deep into personal and collective histories to unearth truths that have been stashed away in societys subconscious.
On the historical side, Caesar and Cleopatra re-imagines the epic couple as equals in the contemporary world; the text-and-movement solo No Sugar, Please explores the contrasting peace and violence that surrounds the cultural history of global tea practices; and 14 Variations comically deconstructs ballroom dances to question our notions of class.
Two premiers explore the personal side: in The Rooms She Carries, the cast examines their relationships with home, and an as-of-yet untitled solo for dancer Kristen Bell explores how ones favorite pieces of music resonate at different points in ones life.
Finally, the eponymous installation with live performance The Memory Closet explores how the history of fashion has both empowered and oppressed women -- and devastated the environment.
