Two Nivens and a Simmons
Two Nivens and a Simmons promises to be an a warm, intimate, evening of intelligently and meticulously written songs featuring brothers El and Garret Niven and their aunt, Christie Simmons. Hosted by Davey Drums in the newly renovated lower level of the Joyce on 4th (where pints and belly-warming pub food will be widely available!), the evening will be a unique opportunity to hear acoustic sets from three connected yet distinctly different songwriters.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Music 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
El Niven
El Niven's immediately available lyrics, tethered sparingly to gritty straight-up acoustic riffs, are a swan dive to the heart. Niven, a committed band-boy-for-life has, in the last few years, toured the US from LA to New Orleans and Canada, from Toronto to Vancouver, as well as the UK. He is no stranger to loneliness, hardship and the unexpected delights of meeting would-be strangers. As a singer/songwriter, Niven gives voice to the introspection harboured in the silent hours between gigs, penning hauntingly simple gems dreamy, yet bare bones which give a new view to the struggle and joy that sits at the heart of human experience.
Garret James
Garret James' music has the same allure as the changing of the seasons. There's magic in old giving way to new and then new becoming classic. This multi-instrumentalist's music unfurls with a fresh and colourful optimism from the heart's dark and timeless ruminations. Honest and vulnerable, Garret's voice is laced with a deep resonance which pays homage to the weight of his lyrics. Refusing to linger on the grey, the musical riffs on Monkey Love build, and emerge, finally, triumphant. "'It's one in a million take that chance, got to fight to live got to see you dance." Revelling in a wide musical landscape, Garret stays true to his Rock and Roll footings, but, by seeding his tunes with celtic, folk and blues, Garret cultivates a sound which, like the shifting seasons is at once deep and desolate, warm and inviting.
Garrets latest EP was recorded in Edmonton, Alberta in a single room. Garret performed on all of the instruments used in the recording including violin, bass, drums ukulele, and guitar. Mixed and Mastered by Stew Kirkwood at Sound Extractor Studios.
Christie Simmons
Christie Simmons' original songs seek to capture the joys of the mundane and the magical and give voice to the soft underbelly of life. As one who spent years playing pipes on the highland games circuit and playing as member of a East-Coast-of-sorts band, she can't deny Celtic undertones in her music. But it's primarily the literary genius of contemporary writers along with strong, intelligent lyrics and raw melodies of the roots/Americana world that inform her songwriting today. Along with playing her originals as a solo artist, Christie plays whistle, guitar, ukulele and sings lead and harmony vocals with the upbeat folk/fusion group My Son Ted.
