CAMELO, means I WANT in the gypsy dialect spoken throughout Spain and especially amongst the flamencos.
Lakshmi Basile, born in 1982, begins performing at age six with her parents' band 'The Electrocarpathians'.
She studies dance through primary, middle, and secondary school at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.
She grew up within San Diego's flamenco scene, where her passionate artistic persona began to form and studies classical dance at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Lakshmi moves to Spain at age 20 to further her flamenco studies. She begins to work in flamenco clubs (tablaos) and in flamenco events aside great artists such as La Toná, the Amaya family, Rubio El Pruna, Antonio Moya, La Tana, Carmen Ledesma, Manuel Molina, etc
Her artistic nickname "La Chimi" is her own name contracted and pronounced in a flamenco manner.
She is the first non-Spanish artist to win an award in the flamenco contest, Concurso de las Minas de La Unión, in 2011 and the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba, surprising the best critics with stunning reviews such as "-un desgarrador homenaje a los románticos de lo jondo" (a heartwrenching homage to the romantics of pure flamenco) Alberto García Reyes, ABC.
She performs daily as a soloist at El Palacio Andaluz and throughout the year appears with major flamenco artists at flamenco and dance festivals.
She is much sought after as a teacher by flamenco students in Spain.
She launch company "Luna Flamenca," producing spectacles in the USA once a year and alternating her artistic career with performances in Spain.
She produces her own theatrical show in Spain, entitled "Zarabanda, Lo Que Duerme en el Cuerpo de los Gitanos." ('Zarabanda, that which sleeps in the body of the gypsies').
She is protagonist in video clip directed by Rindala Kodeih (Lebanon), has inspired flamenco fashion collections and posed for world-renounced photographer Ruven Afanador
La Chimi has founded a substantial artistic career as a flamenco dancer, because that is what she is at heart. "Su baile es de una alegria conquistada (her dance is a conquered happiness)"- Felix Grande, poet and flamencoligist.
