Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Act Two Theatre closes its sensational 19th season with the 8-time TONY Award winning and world renowned musical, "Sweeney Todd", with music and lyrics by the incomparable Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. In this musical thriller set in London, Benjamin Barker, a respected barber, loving husband and new father is exiled and wrongfully imprisoned in Australia for 15 years by the evil Judge Turpin. He returns to London, assuming the name Sweeney Todd, to discover his wife is dead and his daughter is a ward of the very man who imprisoned him. Todd enlists the only person he feels he can turn to, a local pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett to once again set up his shop above her failing business with only one mission...revenge. Sweeney Todd features a cast of over 30 talented actors from all over the St. Louis region and will be the LARGEST cast ever to grace the Act Two stage.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: "Sweeney Todd" opened on Broadway at the Uris Theatre on March 1, 1979 and ran for 557 performances. It was directed by Harold Prince with musical staging by Larry Fuller. It starred Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. "Sweeney Todd" has been brought back to the Broadway stage in two notable revivals, the first being in 1989 and the last in 2005. The classic Sondheim musical was most recently transformed into a 2007 movie, which starred Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, and was directed by Tim Burton. The film garnered critical acclaim and received the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy.
