Samsmaranam - An All-Star Tribute! 1:30-4pm or 5-8pm
Compared by American critics with Nijinsky for his "magnificent sinuous torso and arms" and with Chaplin for his "most inspired gestural acting", Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra (Guruji) is undoubtedly a legendary figure in dance throughout the world.  Often considered the founding father of Odissi, the Indian classical dance form hailing from the eastern state of Orissa, his ability to connect with an audience allowed him to reach beyond patrons of Odissi to a more global audience.  This year marks the 8th anniversary of the passing of this exceptional man, the most sought after maestro of Odissi dance; the Guru of some of the most renowned dancers of this style; an extraordinary dancer known for his perfected movements, vivid expression, and underlying devotion; a brilliant choreographer with over 200 solo pieces and over 50 dance ballets to his credit; and a master percussionist.

Srjan, the institution founded by Guru Mohapatra himself in his home state of Orissa, and Guru Shradha, his institution in the Bay Area, both dedicated to furthering his true vision, are proud to jointly co-host this year's "Samsmaranam," an annual festival in remembrance of Guruji on the anniversary of his passing.  This year, "Samsmaranam" will take place for the first time in the US and in the Bay Area, in collaboration with Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose. "Samsmaranam" also coincides with Guru Shradha's annual festival, "Kelucharan Keerti Sampradaya".
