History in the Making: Celebrating 10 Years of NEW Leadership
The University of Washington Women's Center will kick off the spring season with a celebration of our NEW Leadership Program and its efforts to encourage more women to consider a career in the public sector. "History in the Making: Celebrating 10 Years of NEW Leadership" recognizes the leadership training provided to hundreds of women in Washington State since 2001 when the University of Washington partnered with the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University and their national women's leadership initiative. NEW Leadership teaches college women the value of civic engagement and encourages them to see themselves as empowered leaders who can effectively participate in politics and public policy. NEW Leadership Puget Sound is open to all female undergraduate students who attend four-year or two-year institutions in the Puget Sound region and consists of an intensive six-day training institute held at the UW Women's Center.
We invite NEW Leadership's Alumnae, supporters of the UW Women's Center, and our colleagues in the community and the University for this exciting event. We will start with a cocktail reception at 6 pm followed by dinner and our evening program featuring Michele Storms of the UW Law School.
Michele Storms, current Assistant Dean and Executive Director of the William H. Gates Center for Public Service Law, started her legal career as a staff attorney at Evergreen Legal Services in 1988 with a focus on family law, custody and domestic violence. She later served as a faculty member at the University of Washington School of Law in the clinical law program for eight years where she founded the Child Advocacy Clinic. At UWLS she taught child advocacy, family law and interviewing and counseling for lawyers.
As Ms. Storms has brought a strong force of public service commitment to the UW School of Law. Her mentoring of Gates Public Service Law Scholarship recipients has created opportunities for students to follow their passion for positive social change. Michele empowers students through public service career advising, supports student leaders in organizing cutting-edge conferences, and engages them in conversations about gender issues, human rights, discrimination and government policies.
