Night Photography - Skyline & Bridges
Shoot. Learn. Enjoy Portland.

Learn how to shoot at night! Some of the most amazing images are captured in the evening. Start by photographing the deep blues of "magic hour" and the Portland City Skyline. Next, shoot the dramatic lights of Portland's bridges. Take postcard quality photos at night without flash! Perfect for beginner to advanced hobbyist.

We will also practice a technique called "slow shutter sync", teaching you how to take awesome snapshots in low light with a flash. Also reviewed, a technique called "painting with light" in which a flashlight is used to illuminate your subject instead of a camera flash. F-stops and shutter speeds, as well as other photography basics, are briefly reviewed.

There will be a 20 min lesson before setting up tripods and practicing what you've learned.

Any DSLR or digital point and shoot camera with adjustable shutter speeds and apertures required. Tripod required. Bring any lenses you have, especially any wide angle (10-35mm) or "fast" lenses (F1.4 - F2.8).

$50 per person. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a paid and registered adult.

Meet in front of the Fire Station at SE Madison Street & The Eastbank Esplanade. There is street parking on SE Madison Street.

Please bring your camera manuals. If you don't have your manual, typically you can print it out from your manufacturer's website (or bring it on your mobile
phone or kindle, if it's too long to print.)

Prior to your photo tour and with the aid of your manual, locate the below controls. The photo tour will not cover locating these controls on your camera. We will be learning how to use them. Please note: your camera may not have all these controls.

Thank you for your understanding.

Photo Tours are rain or shine. You will be given tips for shooting in the rain should it occur. Photo Tours are only canceled under extreme weather conditions and according to the discretion of the instructor. Photo Tours are not canceled in advance, so please arrive as scheduled. On the rare occasion that a photo tour is canceled, you will receive a credit to participate in another photo tour of your choice of equal or lesser value.
