The famed jazz singer Carol Sloane wants people to come by to see her as she sings one of her occasional events, this time along with Mike Renzi, a piano accompanist extraordinaire, according to the great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, with Marshall Wood on bass---they both play for Tony Bennett---and Artie Cabral, formerly of the Woody Herman Band on drums. The show is at the Providence Marriott, Charles and Orms Streets, Providence, RI, on Sunday, September 27 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Reserved ticket prices through Brown Paper Tickets are $25 each. Tickets at the door for general admission are $30 each. The producer is John Worsley through his company John Worsley Productions.
Sloane began her singing career at age 14 with the Ed Drew Orchestra at the dance hall Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet, Cranston, RI. She began traveling with the Les and Larry Elgart band in 1959, and made a major hit internationally when she sang at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961. Major jobs followed at such clubs as Mr. Kelly's in Chicago, the hungry i in San Francisco, and Ronnie Scott's in London and she signed a record contract with Columbia Records. Many of Carol's albums will be for sale at this event.
For some time Sloane was considered one of the top singers in jazz, along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. She was a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show In more recent years she was married to the music producer Buck Spurr, who died earlier this year; has been a jazz DJ on station WICN, Worcester, MA, operates her own blog, is writing a biography of the TV star Dave Garroway and has sung in Toronto with pianist Bill Charlap as accompanist.
