LES NOCES + Real Vocal String Quartet + Selmaduse
Live 'n' Local SF Presents an evening of cutting-edge vocal chamber music with Ensemble Épouser performing LES NOCES, Real Vocal String Quartet, and Theresa Wong's Selmaduse trio.
Igor Stravinsky's classic work Les Noces (The Wedding) by Ensemble Épouser makes its San Francisco debut in the Mission's hippest new venue, Viracocha. Dominique Leone, Kanoko Nishi, and the rest of Ensemble Épouser present a radical reinterpretation of the legendary Russian composer's choral work, using a pared down rock ensemble, five vocalists and the miracle of modern, compact technology to transform a modest chamber group into a roaring, cutting-edge music machine!
For this performance, the innovative and charming Real Vocal String Quartet and renowned local composer Theresa Wong and her new trio Selmaduse will join the bill, forging a holiday summit of the best creative musicians and composers in the Bay.
ENSEMBLE ÉPOUSER Ensemble Épouser arose for the single purpose of performing Les Noces, which had its world premiere this July at the historical Maybeck House in Berkeley. Though comprising only ten members, the ensemble performs a work originally written for full choir, five vocal soloists, four pianos and chamber orchestra. Using modern technology, the singers amplify and multiply their voices, which are backed by two pianos and a rock rhythm section. Brainchild of avant-pop artist Dominique Leone (tenor) and pianist/koto improviser and composer Kanoko Nishi, Ensemble Épouser also features Regina Schaffer (piano), Kate McLoughlin (soprano), Diana Pray (soprano), Elise Cumberland (mezzo-soprano), Danishta Rivero (alto), Alexandra Buschman (bass), Jordan Glenn (percussion), Jason Hoopes (upright bass), and Mark Clifford (mallets).

REAL VOCAL STRING QUARTET Flavored with Appalachian, African, and Brazilian sounds, the dulcet voices of RVSQ harmonize in lush sync with their instruments. The marriage of elegant precision with sophisticated pop vocals bridges the chasm between pop, jazz, and classical music. RVSQ was formed by violinist Irene Sazer and includes violinist Alisa Rose, violist Dina Maccabee, and cellist Jessica Ivry. Sazer, an original member of the acclaimed, genre-bending Turtle Island String Quartet, founded RVSQ with a vision for a truly collective endeavor, and this band of perfomer/arranger/composers has coalesced around her original spark. The group's surprisingly broad repertoire embraces the diverse influences of all four players, from jazz and rock to West African music and bluegrass. Sounds and songs inspire the Quartet from every which way. And while four distinct voices can be heard, they blend with each other perfectly. http://www.rvsq.com/
SELMEDUSE Selmaduse is a new song-making experiment led by composer Theresa Wong (voice, cello, percussion), with Cornelius Boots (bass clarinet, shakuhachi, percussion, flute, voice) and Dohee Lee (percussion, voice, taepyeongso). Selmaduse huddles in the corner of a dimensional chatroom where Hildegaard von Bingen, Charlie Chaplin, and Elvin Jones dance with a gang of three year old twins, singing, cheering, and cooking up songs with common sense like your mother makes jellyfish. http://www.theresawong.org/
