Handel's Messiah at Ascension and Saint Agnes
The Choir and Baroque Ensemble of the Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes, conducted by organist and choirmaster J. Owen Burdick, present Handel's Messiah, in a performance to benefit the restoration of the organ.
Join us for a powerful experience of Handel's beloved oratorio, unrivaled in its intimacy and immediacy--Messiah as it was meant to be heard! Dr. Burdick, a foremost authority, performer and conductor of this work, will lead the chamber choir and period instrumentalists in a production refined over multiple seasons at Trinity Wall Street and hailed by the New York Times as "the best in New York" and "a Messiah to beat in a season bursting with them!"
All proceeds from this event will assist in the repair of the church's fine pipe organ, which was significantly damaged by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the Washington region on August 23rd. Originally installed in 2000, and having seen minor tonal revisions earlier this year by the builder, the Létourneau organ was silenced by the quake when falling stonework caused structural damage to the church's roof, turret spire and organ loft.
With your support, we are pleased to present this masterwork to ensure that the musicians of Ascension and Saint Agnes may continue to provide spiritual sustenance and contribute to the musical life of our city.
Tickets are available at $75, $55 and $35 levels, and seating is general admission within each section. Please see the seating chart at right for the location of each section in the church.
Any remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the door beginning one hour before the concert, with payment by cash or check. Please note that we will not be able to process credit card payments at the door. All concertgoers are cordially invited to a reception in the Parish Hall following the performance.
**PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION**
Parking: Street parking is free on Sundays both north and south of Massachusetts Ave., but please allow yourself ample time to park. Most commercial garages in the area are closed on weekends. One exception is the garage at the Washington Plaza Hotel, at 10 Thomas Circle, about two blocks west of the church. Thomas Circle is at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave. and 14th St., and the hotel is located to the northeast side of the circle. This garage charges a flat rate of $20.
Metro: The church is a 10-15 minute walk from the McPherson Square, Metro Center, or Mount Vernon Square stations. Please be aware of delays resulting from scheduled weekend track work and leave extra time if you are taking Metro.
Metrobus routes that travel 14th St. and two of the Circulator bus lines also stop within 2-3 blocks of the church.
