FLOR Y CANTO DECEMBRINO with Sones de Mexico Ensemble & Grupo Tribu
>>NOTE NEW DATE FOR THIS CONCERT IS NOW FIRDAY, DECEMBER 9, 7:30PM AT THE OLYMPIC THEATER IN CICERO, IL<<

Comcast presents a Viva Mexico 2011 concert.

Sones de Mexico Ensemble and special guest from Mexico City, Grupo Tribu, will perform Flor y Canto Decembrino (Songs for December), a family concert at the Olympic Theater, 6134 W. Cermak Rd. in Cicero on Friday, December 9 at 7:30pm. The concert will bring together, with music, many of the diverse traditions that are practiced in Mexico during the month of December.

December is a busy month of celebration in Mexico, not only is Christmas (Navidad) an important holiday; there's also a battery of celebrations that echo Mexico's rich indigenous past: from the annual pilgrimages of millions of people to see the Lady of Tepeyac (Virgin of Guadalupe) on December 12 to Panketzaliztli, the cult of the birth of Huitzilopochtli (the sun god and patron of the Mexicas) on the Winter's solstice. Also performed in December throughout Mexico are the posadas, a nine-day reenactment of Joseph and Mary's pilgrimage to Bethlehem preceding the Nativity, and pastorelas, improvised and often humorous nativity plays with imaginative portrayals of the struggle of good and evil. December 28, Dia de los Santos Inocentes (Holy Innocents Day) is rooted in the biblical passage of the Massacre of the Innocents by Herod, King of Judea, but in Mexico is observed with a similar tradition to April Fools' Day in the U.S.: with pranks of all sorts. Finally, nochevieja, on December 31 marks the end of the calendar year. In some parts, young people go door-to-door singing songs and asking for aguinaldos, small gifts, from their neighbors. In some Southern parts of Mexico it is celebrated with "la quema del Año Viejo," the burning of a rag puppet representing the old year.

Sones de Mexico Ensemble is a nationally acclaimed group that specializes in music traditions from different parts of Mexico. The band made its first public appearance in 1994 at an art gallery in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. Since then, the group has grown into a nationally acclaimed organization with a non-profit mission "to promote greater appreciation of Mexican folk and traditional music through innovative performance, education, and dissemination."

Grupo Tribu, from Mexico City, has devoted 30 years to the preservation of pre-Hispanic music traditions. Their music has been used in documentaries, museums, music and light shows at archeological sites and even rock concerts around the world. The sound of their ocarinas, huehuetls, water drums, and ancient voices have great spiritual power.

Juan Díes, a founding member of the ensemble says:

"This double-bill is going to transport people to a place where ancient sounds of pre-Hispanic Mexico meet modernity, and together blossom in a celebration of Mexican heritage."

Flor y Canto Decembrino (songs for December) is a Sones de Mexico Ensemble production sponsored by Comcast with additional funding provided by Volaris airlines, the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago, and the Illinois Arts Council, a State agency.

This concert will be one day only on Friday, December 9 at 7:30pm at the Olympic Theatre, 6134 W. Cermak Rd., Cicero, Illinois. Admission is $15 ($10 for kids).
