Le pauvre matelot
This intimate opera tells the tale of a woman who has been waiting for years for her husband to return from his travels at sea. The family business is about to fold, she is down to her last penny and on the verge of giving up the wait. But then her husband returns to his home village. In order to view his life as an outsider, he pretends to be a stranger when he finally appears before his wife. Hope turns to desperation and horror as the events unfold. Jean Cocteau's libretto is based on true news events at the time of the opera.
