Being created as part of thefidget space's artist in residency program, Back to the Place I First Left You is a new evening length dance work by local choreographer David Konyk.  "This big beautiful space has so much to offer", says Konyk, who has been working on the creation of the piece since earlier this year.  The work is divided into seven sections that move between different areas of the space.  Through the use of surreal imagery, the audience's focus will be drawn to the sections in a way that blurs the lines between beginnings and endings.  Mr. Konyk has used this residency to work with a new approach.   Instead of focusing mainly on the movements of the dance, he is looking at all the parts that make up the dance to inform its creation.  "How do things like costume, lighting and props hinder or allow movement?", asks David.  He imanifests this vision, and has dancers swinging over an undulating sea of fabric and uses silent film and variety show-inspired imagery   Elements such as: rope swings, painter's plastic, tall black screens and an incredibly talented cast of dancers are sure to be incorporated.  The piece will feature Patricia Dominguez, Molly Jackson, Hedy Wyland, and Konyk himself.  "It is my hope to create a world that this piece lives in as opposed to having the dance just happen in some random space".

David Konyk is a dancer and choreographer based in Philadelphia who has long fostered a love of site specific work. There is something about a piece that is tailored to the space that it is performed in, that inspires and entices him.  Having worked with some of Philadelphia's leading practitioners of site specific work, namely Leah Stein and Kate Watson-Wallace, David's current focus, as a choreographer, is to integrate all the elements of the stage into his creative process.  After a 5 year hiatus from choreographing, Konyk is excited to take on a new perspective in his art making during his time in residence at thefidget space.

Currently, David is a member of the Leah Stein Dance Company and Group Motion Multi-Media Dance Theater.  His previous dance credits include Scrap Performance Group/Myra Bazell (1997-1999), The Bald Mermaids (1999-2000), Kate Watson-Wallace (2004-2007), and The Reactionaries (2004-2006).  As a choreographer, David's work has been presented at the Community Education Center, Philadelphia;  Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, Philadelphia;  DanceNow/NYC, New York;  Dock 11, Germany;  Project Theater, Germany.  When not dancing, David is a student of American Sign Language and the Acting Class with Kenneth McGregor.  He can also be seen working at Honey's Sit n Eat, in Northern Liberties, or zipping around town on his skateboard.  David graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance from Temple University.
