2015 Tenacious Dreams Films Festival - August 1 and 2nd
The 2015 Tenacious Dreams Film Festival, launched by brothers Mark and Greg Runnels, filmmakers who divide their time between Modesto, The Bay Area and Los Angeles, is being held throughout Downtown Modesto the weekend of Saturday August 1st and Sunday August 2nd.
There are nineteen short films in competition from the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Spain, Slovakia, and Canada, with genres that include comedy, animation, experimental, drama, horror, documentary, animation and a musical.
Not in competition is a special screening of the Runnels Brothers first feature film YOUTHANASIA, followed by a Q & A and seminar The Trials and Terrors of Making a First Feature. There will also be a sit-down, audience participation of Tenacious Talk, with a discussion between festival filmmakers. For VIP ticket holders, there will be an opening night mixer, closing night awards ceremony, presenting winning jury and audience favorite films, entrance to seminar and entrance to Tenacious Talk.
General admission is $12, which includes entrance to BOTH short film programs. VIP All Access Festival Pass is $40 (all screenings, seminars, opening night mixer and closing night awards ceremony).
SHORTS PROGRAM ONE - 67 minutes (3 pm, Sunday August 2, Prospect Theater Project)
1. Antennas to Beyond - 5 minutes - Experimental (2013, US) "We shot this film throughout several days on a budget of practically nothing. Using a DIY dolly, extensive time at thrift stores shopping for electronics up the whazoo, and numerous cups of coffee drank during heavy pre-production, we utilized every resource we had to create this unique film."
2. Miss Finknagle Succumbs to Chaos - 10 minutes - Comedy (2013, US, Bay Area) This delightful tale, chronicling one fate-turning day in the life of lonely high school librarian Miss Finknagle, is told through the eyes of four high school students.
3. Crucez - 6 minutes - Drama - (2013, MEXICO) A tragic yet beautiful film chronicling the epidemic of violence in Mexico.
4. Cualquier - 7 minutes - Experimental - (2013, US) Cualquier follows an adolescent struggling with the consequences of his choices, and the devastations that they cause to people around him, on a personal and large scale.
5. 8 Ball - 6 minutes - Drama - (2013, UK) A sad and whimsical tale of fate and mourning, told through the power of an 8 Ball toy.
6. 80's Monster Claymation - 3 minutes - Animation (2013, US) "80's Monster Claymation is a remake/homage to my favorite monster movies from the 80's, which are the films that inspired me to be a film maker. The movies in my short that paid homage to include Brain Damage, The Fly, Basket Case, The Blob, Pumpkinhead, From Beyond, and Gremlins!"
7. Derniers Recours (Last Ditch) - 17 minutes - Drama (2013, FRANCE) A riveting drama by French filmmaker Mahi Bena with notes of early Martin Scorsese.
8. Driftwood - 11 minutes - Drama - (2012, UK) Set in London, Driftwood is the story of fifteen-year-old Sam, a swimming prodigy, whose life is split into two very different worlds: a poignant antithesis between talent and achievement at the dawn of his sporting career, and fear and torment in his home and social life.
9. (notes on) biology - 5 minutes - Animation (2012, US, Bay Area) A brilliant, animated account of an organism adapting to its environment.
SHORTS PROGRAM TWO - 64 minutes (5 pm, Sunday August 2, Prospect Theater Project)
1. Medicine For Your Dreams (World Premiere) - 5 minutes - Animation (2013, US) A wild animated film that journeys through deep space, the dark and light corners of the brain, and beyond.
2. Varuo - 6 minutes - Music Video - (2013, CANADA) Sigur Ros music video.
3. Black & White - 12 minutes - Drama (2013, UK) A short social realism film that mixes drama & documentary interviews with its cast of non-professionals actors as each of them tries to answer the difficult question of how they try to live their lives inside of broken Britain.
4. Capacities - 11 seconds - Comedy (2013, GERMANY) A description of capacity, as it exists in general and un/limited nature for man and his environment, OR a brilliant, visual palate cleanser between films, OR an eleven second masterpiece.
5. Zombie National Guard - 7 minutes - Comedy (2013, US) America is now in the protective hands of the Zombie National Guard, a clandestine security force that seeks to quell malevolent supernatural activity when and wherever it occurs.
6. Trapped In The Net - 13 minutes - Documentary (2012, SLOVAKIA) A young student decides to embark on an unusual experiment - changing sex - on the Internet.
7. Mass - 3 minutes - Horror (2013, US, Central Valley) A cult of women who worship a female God get ambushed by a group of crazed vigilante fundamentalists.
8. Sightseeing - 4 minutes - Experimental (2013, US) An experimental journey of otherworldly colors, textures, shapes and sounds.
9. They Both Explode - 3 minutes - Animation (2013, UK) A short hallucinatory tale of consumption, sorrow, redemption and vomit. A peckish heron meets a frog with inviting eyes. They both explode.
10. Dragon High School - 8 minutes - Musical (2013, SPAIN) A short musical about parents dropping their children off at school and feeling separation anxiety in the oddest way.
