The Cure & Uncommon Clay
VAA New Works Series 2011 begins with two one act original plays adapted by Island playwright/actor Fr. Marc Powell from short stories written by New York Times best selling author Susan Vreeland. The stories focus on Vreeland's lifelong commitment to art. Author of six books, her works (including best seller Girl in Hyacinth Blue)demonstrate art as a powerful transformational medium to turn chaos and confusion into understanding and compassion.

Adventures of Bernardo and Salvatore, or, The Cure: A Tale, is a comedic road trip (circa 1700s) meets bucket list. In the midst of a mid-life crisis, Tuscan villager Bernardo goes to bed certain that he is dying. His best friend Salvatore is unable to cajole him out of bed until Bernardo mentions he wants to see the great art of the world before he dies. A true friend, Salvatore sacrifices much to accompany Bernardo to Rome in search of art by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Raphael, Michelangelo and more.
Uncommon Clay, a poignant one-act, focuses on a young female potter who learns how closely life and art parallel as she throws pots and cares for her mother who has Alzheimer's. Both plays are rated PG-13 for subject matter and feature an all Island cast.

When asked why he chose these works to adapt, Powell replied, "I fell in love with her collection of short stories-their underlying message is about transcending every day life through art. Susan [Vreeland] has been very supportive of the project."

Powell, who moved to Vashon just over a year ago to head St. John Vianney, worked as a reporter before joining the seminary and regularly contributes to The Progress for the Seattle Archdiocese. "Wherever I've work I try to either act or write. I love trying to communicate a worthwhile message."

Vreeland's books will be available at the free preview 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 22.  The author will attend the preview performance and sign books after the show.
