The Casement Fund Song Series presents: American Landscapes
A song recital of American poetry and music that looks at the rich fabric of the American landscape.
Poetry by Robert Hayden, Ted Kooser and Walt Whitman with music by Tom Cipullo, Stephen Paulus, and Lee Hoiby.
Renowned baritone Andrew Garland will sing with long time collaborator Donna Loewy at the piano. Maechi Aharanwa from the Classical Theater of Harlem will join them both to read the poetry of these three great poets in between these inspired song settings.
Andrew Garland:
This season Andrew Garland returns to Seattle Opera as Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos. He has performed the role of Dandini with Opera Philadelphia and Fort Worth Opera, Mercurio (La Calisto) and the title role in Galileo Galilei (by Philip Glass) at Cincinnati Opera, Papageno at Boston Lyric Opera and Riolobo (Florencia en el Amazonas) and Schaunard (La Bohème) at Seattle Opera. Garland is widely recognized as a leader in recital work with dozens of performances around the country. He is a regular with the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS) and has given multiple recitals at Carnegie Hall, the Ravinia festival as well as Vocal Arts DC, Marilyn Horne Foundation, The Bard Festival, Andre-Turp Society in Montreal, Voce at Pace, Huntsville Chamber Music Guild, Fort Worth Opera, Seattle Opera, Fanfare in Hammond, LA, Cincinnati Matinee Musicale, Tuesday Morning Music Club and dozens of college music series around the country.

Donna Loewy:
Donna Hallen Loewy is Field Service Professor of Collaborative Piano and Accompanist-in-Residence at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has worked as an opera coach with the Israel Vocal Arts Institute, Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca (Italy), International Institute of Vocal Arts (Italy), and Cincinnati Opera. Ms. Loewy prepared and accompanied many top prize winners of the NFMC Young Artist Competition and NATS Artist Awards, as well as Marilyn Horne Foundation sponsored recitals and residencies throughout the country. She is on the faculty of Lingua e Canto, and been a coach for SongFest, the Barcelona Festival of Song, and Pianist-in-Residence at New Music on the Point. Loewy is the voice consultant and co-author of the Inner Game of Music Vocal Workbook, written with Barry Green. Her CD with baritone Andrew Garland, On The Other Shore, featuring the folk song settings of Steven Mark Kohn, on Azica Records, has met with great critical acclaim. American Portraits, a much-celebrated new CD with Mr. Garland, on GPR Records, features music of Tom Cipullo, Jake Heggie, Lori Laitman, and Stephen Paulus.
Maechi Aharanwa:
MAECHI AHARANWA's credits include Off Broadway productions of An Octoroon (TFANA), Facing Our Truth- Night Vision, No More Monsters Here (NBT), Mother Courage, Macbeth, The Blacks, Trojan Women (Classical Theatre of Harlem) and The Beyonce Effect (TFTTF). In regional theater she performed in Seven Guitars, Antigone, Miss Julie, A Women Called Truth. Her workshops and readings have included the Sundance Theatre Lab, the Playwrights Realm, the Public Theatre, the New York Theatre Workshop, the Soho Rep, the Lark, Atlantic Stage 2. In Television and film she has been seen on Show me a Hero(HBO), Person Of Interest(CBS), 30 Rock(NBC), Mercy(NBC), Maybe There's A Tree, Police State, Silver Sling. Maechi is a Princess Grace Award Recipient, is Director of the Classical Theater of Harlem's Project Classics. She trained at the Juilliard School. www.maechi.net
