TE AMO JAZZ @ CONSERVATORY
The new Te Amo Jazz music concert series with TEATRO Sí celebrates the best of Jazz fusion performance that comes to us from various regions of Latin America. A selection of outstanding professional artists presents their talents to a New Jersey audience at a monthly concert performance that demonstrates the spirit of the young and established Latin American musician. A special Valentine's Day Te Amo Jazz concert event comes to the wonderfully intimate Conservatory piano studio venue, located at 1591 Irving Street next to the Union County Performing Arts Center in the dynamic downtown Rahway Arts District. On Saturday, February 12, 2011 the acclaimed Sabrina Lastman Quartet takes the stage stage at 7pm in a concert that promises to be a memorable experience for the music lover.
The Sabrina Lastman Quartet is an innovative music project that brings together jazz, South American rhythms with African roots like Candombe (Afro Uruguayan music) and contemporary music. This project represents the many influences that vocalist/composer Sabrina Lastman has received, while living in her home country Uruguay, in Israel, and more recently in New York. The Quartet plays original compositions, and arrangements of music by Latin American composers like Egberto Gismonti, and Ruben Rada. As a vocalist, Sabrina expands the possibilities of the voice, finding a rich variety of sonorities, colors, and textures.
New York based vocalist, performer, composer and educator Sabrina Lastman was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. In New York Sabrina has performed at Carnegie Hall, Classical Guitar Association of New York, Blues Alley Jazz, Blue Note, Joe's Pub, Museo del Barrio, Juilliard, New York University, and City University of New York, among others. She has played with artists such as Fernando Otero, Bakithi Kumalo, Tali Roth, Pablo Aslan, Emilio Solla, Gustavo Casenave, Pedro Giraudo, David Silliman, Leonardo Suarez-Paz, Sasha Bogdanowitsch, The M6, Philip Hamilton, and David Glukh Ensemble. The Folds of the Soul was nominated by the Graffiti Award 2008 as one of the best jazz albums of the year, and it was considered of cultural interest by the Ministry of Culture and Education in Uruguay. In 2009 she released with Sasha Bogdanowitsch the album On Becoming based on the interdisciplinary performance by the same name. Sabrina was awarded grants from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) & New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council on the Arts. She has toured in Israel, Uruguay, Argentina, and the United States playing in many musical and interdisciplinary projects from Tango to New Music. She graduated from The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Israel.
Bassist Alexis Cuadrado has a solid reputation as an award-winning composer and bandleader, and a devoted world-class educator. Barcelona-born Alexis has become one of the most sought-after musicians in the New York jazz scene. In 2008 he was awarded a Chamber Music America "New Works" grant that led to the creation of his new epic recording, Noneto Ibérico, successfully premiered in October of 2009 to critical acclaim, and featured on WNYC's "Soundcheck" with host John Schaefer. It will be released on CD in February of 2011.  Cuadrado has three other CDs as a leader: Puzzles (Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records, 2008), Visual (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2004) and Metro (FSNT, 2001), which include original compositions and have received enthusiastic reactions from critics and fans alike.
He has excellent credits as a sideman, with over 20 recording appearances and performances with such greats as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bruce Barth, Ben Monder, Perico Sambeat, Mark Turner, Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo, Ben Waltzer/Bill McHenry Quartet, Steve Wilson, or Seamus Blake amongst many others. He currently keeps busy freelancing with different bands in New York, the US and Europe.
Cuadrado graduated in Jazz Performance and Composition from the Taller De Músics in Barcelona (1993) he went on to study with the legendary concert bass master François Rabbath in Paris (1995-98). In 2001 he got a Master's Degree in Jazz Performance and Composition (graduating with honors) at the Aaron Copland School Of Music-Queens College (NY). He is a current faculty member at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC, and teaches worldwide as a guest lecturer. He is a founder of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground, a 10 bandleader/composer collective that strives to promote originality and create awareness of innovative jazz artists in Brooklyn, and a co-owner of the record label Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records.
Pianist and composer Emilio Solla from Argentine has composed, arranged for and performed with Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill's Big Band and Pablo Aslan's Avantango, among others, besides performing with his NY Tango Jazz Project in some of the strongest venues in town: The Lincoln Center, Jazz Standard and Smalls, featuring Chris Cheek, Victor Prieto, Jorge Roeder and Richie Barshay. He continues to tour Europe twice a year with Emilio Solla & Afines, his Barcelona's based quintet, while working as a free lance arranger and pianist in different projects in NY. In 1983 he started to compose and play his own music, a fusion of modern Argentine tango and folklore with jazz and other contemporary music styles. His first band, Apertura, was praised by Astor Piazzolla as one of the most interesting new sounds in the Buenos Aires scene. Nowadays, with five CDs as band leader for the prestigious Fresh Sound Records label and concerts all around Europe, Japan, and the US, he is considered one of the most outstanding and personal voices in this musical stream (generally referred to as "tango-jazz"). Solla got his degree in Classical Piano from the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires in 1986, and studied composition, arranging, counterpoint, improvisation and conducting in Buenos Aires, Barcelona and New York with teachers such as Susana Kasakoff, Gabriel Senanes, Miquel Ortega and Bruce Barth. Solla moved to Barcelona in 1996 and to New York in 2006.
Drummer and Percussionist David Silliman's middle name should be versatility. Whether accompanying song stylists such as Mariah Carey, Cassandra Wilson, Blossom Dearie or with instrumentalist's like guitarist Al DiMeola and Columbian harpist Edmar Castaneda, David's exciting rhythmic energies add color and mood to any musical performance. David was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was exposed to a wide variety of music. David's first studies were in the classical field. Later studies exposed him to jazz, Latin jazz, Brazilian and funk music. Hearing music with a drummer and a percussionist made a strong impression on his playing. Trying to recreate this sound and "feel" with just one person has become a lifetime passion and research. David's current setup includes a standard American drum set. Augmenting this set-up David has included an LP Cajon, Middle Eastern dumbek, LP Giovanni Series Djembe and congas. David also surrounds himself with various triangles, shakers, chimes and as they are called in the business, "toys". Using his unique setup allows him to move seamlessly from the cajon to the dumbek, to his conventional drum set and various other percussive instruments in between. Thus creating the rhythmic sound and energy of two or three percussionists
Seating is limited. Reservations are recommended.
We hope you will join us often during the year on the second Saturday of the month to celebrate the arts in a unique setting.
