HeARTS Toward Haiti
HeARTS Toward Haiti
Sunday, May 6 7:00 p.m.
Lois M. Nelson Theater/The Collingwood Arts Center
Local musicians and dancers unite to support
the New Victorian School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
and to re-establish its instrumental music program.
The school was destroyed by fire in 2000, but has
since been re-built.
The school's Haitian director, Romel Joseph, a Fulbright scholar, who holds violin degrees from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School in New York, lost most of his vision when, as a child in Haiti, an illness went untreated.
In spite of his disability and bypassing other opportunities, he returned home and, in 1991, founded this
school to serve the children of his impoverished country.
A close friend of Romel's, Cecilia Johnson, local free-lance
violinist, has asked friends, known and unknown to unite to
bring hope to the children and families of Haiti.
Performers to include:
Jon Hendricks (recently honored at the Lincoln Center
as one of Americaâs living jazz legends)
Mark Mikel (singer/guitarist/songwriter) of The Pillbugs
Sariah and Shaun Shutts of The Ballroom Company
Linnea Johnson, of Ballet Theatre of Toledo
Michael Boyd (pianist) of the University of Toledo
The children of CYMBAL (Community Youth Motivated by Arts Learning)
