Dick Powell - A New Jazz! May 7th @ The Wiggle Room

DICK POWELL is back with A NEW JAZZ.
The company that brought you DICK POWELL'S IN THE MOOD FOR JAZZ and COLD LONELY NIGHTS returns to THE WIGGLE ROOM May 7th and 8th.
After a lengthy convalescence in the Whiskey Islands, Dick Powell returns to the stage to debut his new album A NEW JAZZ. Accompanied by his Doctor Woody Bobber, Dick is supported by the Buck Wheaton Trio and visited by his lovely and more famous exwife, Laura Thornton. Holly Houston Vanderbilt III will also return to continue his lecture series on the history of jazz, providing context for the evenings proceedings.
The show is a tightly conceived, improvised, musical revue featuring songs from the Jazz oeuvre, songs you have never heard, songs you wish you could forget and songs that will move you to tears. Our anti-hero is Dick Powell, a toneless oaf who has been famous for so long no one can particularly remember why. He is hated by his band, The Buck Wheaton trio, a five-piece with a fierce loyalty towards Laura Thornton. Laura Thornton, the most famous woman in the world, is really who we all come to see.
A NEW JAZZ creates a unique world that is dense in detail and unrelenting in its pursuit of a good night out. Channeling the Rat Pack and influenced by the Golden Age of Hollywood, television variety shows, Andy Kaufman and more, A NEW JAZZ is a train wreck in a tuxedo. Dick Powell may be a man alone, but he is musically supported, entirely outclassed and ultimately redeemed by our five-piece jazz band and the lovely Laura Thornton. Dick is a star burning out before our eyes, he is tragedy, he is a monument to audacity.
