Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield - William Parker Octet featuring Amiri Baraka
In describing his 2010 release, I Plan to Stay a Believer: The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield, jazz bassist William Parker says, "Curtis Mayfield was a prophet, a preacher, a revolutionary, a humanist, and a griot. He took the music to its most essential level in the America of his day. If you had ears to hear, you knew that Curtis was a man with a positive message a message that was going to help you to survive." The album is the culmination of a project that began more than 10 years ago with the goal of interpreting Mayfield's socially conscious-infused pop songs in the same way one would approach Duke Ellington or Thelonius Monk. Parker will be joined in this performance by several of the musicians from the CD, including poet, playwright and activist Amiri Baraka.
