Trip to 1963 Leesburg Stockyard "Stolen" Girls Civil Rights Commemoration in Americus
In 1963, more than 30 African American girls,  10 to 15 year old Civil Rights activists, were arrested and jailed at a Georgia Civil War era stockade without the knowledge of their parents, in deplorable facilities, and with little food - for 45 days.

On Saturday, April 4, we will hear their stories.

Seats Will Go Fast - Space is Limited - Payment is required for RSVP verification.

Van will meet at Sumter Park Parking Lot at 1865 Neely Avenue (between Lexington and Warren Way), East Point, GA

The cost of this trip is being subsidized by Year of the Griot.  Participants are asked to pay $10 to offset price of gas and vehicle rental.

We will meet at 9:00AM and depart shortly after 9:15AM. Please be timely.  Water will be provided, and we will be providing transport in a large SUV.

We recommend bringing lunch, but we will stop at Subway or Zaxby's before heading back to Atlanta.

We will return after the event, and will likely be back by 6:30pm.

From the Event Website:

A program to commemorate the bravery of the 1963 Leesburg Stockade Girls:  "This program will be held at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. The life and legacy of the fourteen (14) black female adolescents held hostage in the Leesburg Stockade will be commemorated. Those living are Dr. Shirley Green-Reese, Willie Mae Smith-Davis, Carol Barner-Seay, Melinda Jones-Williams, Verna Hollis, Billie Jo Thornton-Allen, Diane Dorsey-Bowens, Lula Westbrooks-Griffin, and Laura Ruff-Saunders. Those deceased are Pearl Brown, Mattie Crittenden, Sandra Russell-Mansfield, Annie Lou Ragans-Laster, and Gloria Westbrooks. These girls, ages 11 - 15, played an instrumental role in shaping the Civil Rights Movement in Americus, Dawson, and Leesburg, Georgia during the 1960s.

The survivors of this horrendous ordeal will break their silence to share how the intricacies of their illegal imprisonment and abuse impacted their lives. We would be honored if you would accept this invitation to join us for this special event."
