Eastside Urban Anniversary Celebration, Education Project Benefit, and "Great Places Dinner
On Saturday April 11, Eastside Urban Farm & Garden will be holding our 1 year Anniversary Celebration from 12 noon-9pm! We will be celebrating the day with a barbecue, sales throughout the store, raffles, live music, and a silent auction with live music and food/dinner later on. The silent auction/dinner (6-9pm) is co-hosted by Olympia Village Builders, who have designated our center as one of the "Great Places" for their 2015 community building activities! The dinner event is the ticketed event here on donation basis. Tickets are available on a sliding scale/donation basis as part of the fundraising activities. It is open to the public!
About the Dinner + Auction Fundraiser:
As part of our on-going mission to help provide great education to the public about farming, gardening, and sustainable living, we have partnered this year with several non-profit groups: the Upper Eastside Neighborhood Association, the WA State Dept of Veteran Affairs, Olympia Village Builders, Growing Veterans, the NW Eco-Building Guild, and others, and we are working together on some exciting community education projects! These include: 1) creating a 300-foot community edible hedge and walkway with seating area and info boards (all of which will be used for classes and education and to provide food to the community), 2) creating a community teaching garden area (approx.. 80 x 40 feet) where classes will be conducted in year-round agriculture, gardening and plant propagation, and 3) the further development of educational programs and the 27 classes here at the center that focus on farming, gardening, animal husbandry, and food preservation. Increasing food resiliency in our community is very important to us! Our center is located in a neighborhood where 3 out of 5 families receive free or reduced price school lunches, and where the need for helping families learn how to grow some of their own food is crucial. Together with our partner organizations we have applied for grants to help fund these programs. We have also made a commitment to provide matching funds for the programs, as we feel strongly that helping our community and neighborhood is the most important work we can do!
On Saturday April 11 we will not just be celebrating our first year in business, but will also be raising funds to benefit these education projects and the groups involved. We are holding raffles during the day, and in the evening we will have a silent auction, with food and live music. During the auction, members from the participating groups will be presenting information about their projects and the work their organizations are engaged in. We are hoping to have around 30 substantial auction items to raise funds for the program, as our goal is to raise $5000.
Please join us for this important event!
