Subtitle Film Festival - Hanging Garden directed by Toshiaki Toyoda
"We never conceal the truth, no subject is taboo. We try to share everything with each other," goes the family rule at the Kyobashi's. Although they maintain the facade of the "good family," we soon discover that they all harbor deep secrets and are drifting apart from each other. The precocious daughter Mana habitually skips class to sleep with men she hardly knows at the same "love hotel" in which she was conceived. Her younger brother Ko represents a classic "otaku," vicariously living through his computer and rarely removing his headphones. Their father Takashi is deluded and pursues multiple affairs, including one with a woman who happens to bear the name Mina and with it certain obvious Freudian suggestions. Eriko, the mother, also has her own irksome secrets, struggling with a strained relationship with her mother and haunted by the memories of an unhappy childhood spent in virtual isolation. It is only when Mina becomes Ko's tutor and enters the family's tenuous circle that the Kyobashis' lies are forced out into the open with brutal and explosive candor.
