tinypistol: beast / The Foundry: Poem
tinypistol presents beast: Is beauty a prerequisite to relevance? Through a feminist, animalist examination of classic archetypes and societal misogyny, beastseeks to dismantle the tyranny of beauty by exalting the status of the "ugly" andrevealing the grotesqueness of conventional expectations around female appearance and behavior. Finding inspiration in Oscar Wilde's quote, "The ugly can be beautiful. The pretty never," beast revels in instinct, wildness, and love of our animal bodies./ The Foundry will be presenting "Poem", a new work exploring a variety of choreographic impulses choreographer and director Alex Ketley has pursued in the past couple of years. These choreographic studies stem from time spent with the company in the studio as well as information gathered during the company's various projects traveling and exploring what dance means to people throughout rural parts of the United States, as done through the company's "No Hero" series. Poem is episodic, and looks at a number of different ways that movement can achieve a sense of visual traction.
