50 Kids 50 Cameras
silent tapes and UNIS are proud to host a fundraiser gala to benefit children living in the favelas of Fortaleza, Brazil, and celebrate the launch of UNIS JT3 and 50 Kids 50 Cameras cross cultural exchange exhibition, at the UNICEF wing of the United Nations Headquarters.

Over the summer 2014, silent tapes visited the favelas in Fortaleza, Brazil. They gave 50 cameras to 50 kids, and after they were taught photography skills, the kids were set free to capture their world. The project is part of a documentary initiative to bring awareness to the issues facing children living in the Favelas in Brazil. You can learn more about that here:

Through a series of serendipitous moments, silent tapes teamed up with the UN International School in NYC to do a collaborative project in conjunction with their Global Connections unit. A selected group of students have been connected to the children in Brazil, and have been "pen-pals", exchanging sharing their worlds with one another through writings and photographs.

Additionally, UNICEF gained interest in the project and will host a month-long exhibition following the Gala on April 16th 2015, at the UNICEF wing of the UN Headquarters.

The project opens the opportunity to learn geography, writing, service learning, photography, and social-emotional skills all while taking action to contribute to the lives of these wonderful Brazilian children.

The proceeds raised at the Gala will go back to the children who participated in the workshops in Brazil by building a community center, and also to fund a program for prevention of child exploitation.
