Monteverdi in Venice
Be transported into the lofty domes of the Cathedral of San Marco in Venice, surrounded
by the salty must and murmur of the canals, and the odor of aged beeswax. From the dimly lit choir we hear the strains of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610, written for the greatest musical forces of its day. The splendor of Monteverdi's dazzling instrumental writing will be revealed as the Vespers floods the mind and heart with music ranging from intimate love songs to rapturously grand double chorus settings. Monteverdi lavished all of his skill on this dramatic tribute to the Virgin Mary. Throughout this
year, in honor of the 400th anniversary of its first publication, the whole world is celebrating this seminal work of passion and genius. Do not miss the only performance in Philadelphia of this masterpiece that has endured and fired the minds of people for four centuries.
