The Stauffer Duo in Concert at SRJC
The Stauffer Duo returns to the SRJC Chamber Concert Series where they first performed together in the summer of 1980. Thomas Stauffer, Professor Emeritus of Music at San Diego State University, is a native of Napa County. His first concerto appearance was with the Napa Symphony in 1963. He studied with Margaret Rowell and Gabor Rejto before moving to Europe where he was a Fulbright Fellow in cello at the Music Academy of Zagreb, Croatia and a Student extraordinar in composition at the Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna. After returning to the United States, he taught at a number of Bay Area universities from 1976 to 1984 during which time he also served as principal cellist of the Santa Rosa Symphony under Corrick Brown. He was appointed to the faculty at San Diego State University in 1984 and spent twelve years as the principal cellist of the San Diego Chamber orchestra. Cynthia Darby is a versatile pianist known for her musical insights and range of tonal colors. Born in Santa Rosa, her early studies were with Siegfried Schultze in Ukiah and Frances Kelly in Santa Rosa. She moved to Boston to study with Russell Sherman at New England Conservatory of Music, where she graduated with highest honors and was a fellowship recipient to Tanglewood. Ms. Darby has performed on such respected concert venues as the Gardner Museum in Boston, Sundays at Four in Los Angeles, and the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco and has appeared as a guest artist with several orchestras, including the San Francisco and Santa Rosa Symphonies. She has served on a number of faculties including MIT, University of San Diego and San Diego State University. After twenty-five years in San Diego, Thomas and Cynthia are enjoying life in Ashland Oregon where they are active performers and teachers and serve on the Board of the Chamber Music Concerts Series at Southern Oregon University.
