"San Diego Dances at Bread & Salt"
Innovative, Affordable, World Class PGK Dance and guests perform at a re-purposed Bread Factory in Logan Heights, San Diego.

The PGK Dance Project, San Diego's most widely-travelled top-tier contemporary dance company, presents "San Diego Dances at Bread & Salt", a century-old 43,000-square-foot former bread factory in Logan Heights during the week of March 6 - 8, 2015.  Over the past 20 years, The PGK Dance Project has danced on stages around the world in Europe, Central and South America, Central Asia and Australia, serving as a Cultural Envoy of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Education and Culture.

Locally, PGK is best-known for its critically-acclaimed San Diego Dances, performed twice-yearly since 2009 in locations not normally associated with professional dance, such as a hair salon, a wine bar, and a former gas station. The move away from theaters, explains Peter G. Kalivas, Founding Artistic/Executive Director of The PGK Dance Project, reflects PGK's mission to make great dance more sustainable, affordable and accessible to the community.

"There are many people, particularly the younger generation, who are no longer raised attending the theater. Others are simply no longer able to afford it," says Kalivas. This remains the creative catalyst through The PGK Dance Project's 21st season, which includes this 12th iteration of the San Diego Dances program.  What makes this annual program particularly special is that it shows the multi-faceted dimension of The PGK Dance Project as a creative, performing and presenting organization of dance from San Diego.

The PGK Dance Project itself will perform an array of works created by a wide variety of choreographers including the newly expanded version of "Tell Your Story Before They Do/Why the Arts Matter", after its premier in October 2104 at The Lyceum Space Theater.  This new version maintains, deconstructs and re-mixes the original collaboration between PGK Dance Artistic Director Peter Kalivas and spoken word artist Nate Howard of Movement BE and further manipulates speeches by Michelle Obama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and lyrics by Jodi Mitchell and Roberta Flack supporting the works anthem like, "call to arms" quality.  Premiers include "The Sound of Dance", a collaboration conceived and directed by Mr. Kalivas featuring Kristina Cobarubbia (Spanish Flamenco) and Divya Devaguptapu (classical Indian Katak) and John Paul Lawson (American Tap Dance) in a project that presents forms in an unexpected way that traditionally rely on sound as part of their production.  A new work by Blythe Barton, Artistic Director of Blythe Barton Dance for The PGK Dance Project will premier also and compliment the return of Rosalia Lerner's (2014 winner of PGK Dance's "Another Kind of Choreographer's Competition") "Generally, Women Tend To,"; a compelling dance/theatre work and audience favorite that premiered this past October at The PGK Dance Project's Lyceum debut that looks at historically passive generalizations about women, the gorgeous "From A Whisper", by Kim T. Davis, Bay area director of kimdavisdance known for her quiet sculptural work and "Stay With Me", a newly re-arranged romantically combative duet for PGK Dancers Megan R. Jenkins and Nguyen Bui featuring Peter Kalivas and Rayme Sciaroni on "live" vocals and piano respectively.

The additional purpose of San Diego Dances is to present other local artists on a PGK curated program. Guest companies include: somebodies dance theater directed by Gina and Kyle Sorensen and guest independent choreographers Anjanette Maraya-Ramey and Viviana Alcazar Haynes with their respective dancers.  somebodies dance theater was presented at the very first San Diego Dances program ever at DK Hair salon in Hillcrest in 2009 and Anjanette Maraya-Ramey and Viviana Alcazar Haynes have both created work for The PGK Dance Project among others previously in addition to their independent projects.

Doors open one hour in advance of performances for people to tour the vast former Bread Factory and all its various chambers, now re-purposed into working art spaces and a radio station, enjoy drinks and snacks provided by nearby Logan Heights vendors.

Friday and Saturday evening, March 6 and 7th at 730pm and Sunday matinee March 8th at 2pm.  In honor of Women's History Month, artwork and a film installation also occur including the world known dance film featuring a original Graham dancer, "Frances Wessels: A Portrait of 89 Years" created by Jason Akira Somma, also curated by Peter Kalivas.
