Schools, Food and Gardening: Cultivating a Healthy Future
From family farms and school gardens to cafeterias and classrooms, locally grown food is becoming a thread that weaves together nutrition, environmental and cultural education, contributing to the health and well-being of our children. With the support of programs like Farm to School, SchoolFood Plus and Adopt A School Garden, here in New York City we are beginning to see the components of a more holistic approach that encourages healthy food choices in our schools, a touchstone in the battle against childhood obesity and other diet-related diseases.
Hard won improvements in the school food environment are to be nurtured, celebrated, replicated and sustained. What we need now to advance recent innovation in school menus, local sourcing, and environmental and nutrition education are the following ingredients: public and private collaboration, institutional commitment, financial investment, and political will.
Join 400 practitioners, parents and advocates for a very full day of panels, workshops, a resource fair and networking lunch. Explore how food and gardening initiatives are taking root in schools and how we can build upon these efforts to ensure a healthier future for New York's children.
This conference is co-sponsored by Baum Forum, a not for profit program of conferences designed to focus public attention on food and farming issues and the Nutrition Program at Teachers College Columbia University. It is a follow-up to last year's sold out conference, Schools and Food: Innovation, Opportunity and Wellness.
